An Afro-Guyanese Immigrant Scholar-In-Training & her Path to Ph.D.

ABOUT ME!
What's a nice Guyanese gyal doing in a place like the academy?
What is it that fuels you? For me, it’s my Guyanese, Caribbean culture, and my passion as an educator.
I'm Kat J. Stephens, Ed. M. & I am PhD student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I study higher education, engaging with education in a way that examines identity formation of foreign-born Black students. I consider myself a Caribbeanist with a lens through education which I use as a tool in social justice.
I was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and migrated to Queens, New York as a child, with my parents and siblings. I have since lived in Brooklyn, New York, another Caribbean enclave. I attended Borough of Manhattan Community College, & Sarah Lawrence College. I earned my Master of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, in Higher & Postsecondary Education.
I enjoy learning, new opportunities, presenting at conferences, and writing to advance our profile and thought as a people from an often neglected region. Caribbean thinkers and scholars are a part of history, and no matter what island you are representing, there is a community for you here.
On twitter, I'm @EduSankofa, come see what's up.
